If you can't get the Engine Clean Up Items Checklist complete in the time it's going to take to fly north of the airport, turn around and head back south to the VOR...you're def doing it wrong.
From what I recall doing it in the Sim, it takes around 10-15 mins once you've hit accel height...and I'd argue that getting that checklist complete constitutes "Aviating", since it requires to be complete without delay. There are quite a few items I'd like to see accomplished.
YMMV
