Housing allowances are taxed as ordinary income. Only the military gets that tax free. Per Diem can only go up a small amount before it’s taxed. A reserve pilot who does not fly much may not like the concept. Same for a pilot on sick leave. In addition it’s not pensionable or eligible for profit sharing so you lose 30% give or take before the tax break.
