Try going elsewhere. CFI's are people, just like anyone else. In the past I was able to find friendly, humble flight instructors who were more like the aviation professionals they should be than the drill seargent you describe. I also ran across one or two that were difficult and uncaring; happens in all fields. One in particular was arrogant and unable to teach very well. I let him go and was happy I did so.
