This happened to me two days ago with the meltdown in EWR. My schedule was changed last minute to DH EWR-SFO and the gate agent gave me a middle economy seat 1 hour before departure when I checked in. I asked if any Economy Plus seats were available and she said no. I politely told her I wouldn't be going in that seat and that I would call someone to resolve it. I called the FODM and left a message. 10 minutes later he called back and miraculously found me an Economy Plus seat. It was a simple process and had the FODM not been able to resolve it, I simply wouldn't have boarded.
