In my experience, don't trust the smiley faces. Just have a couple options and start trying. I've gotten on a red face no problem with Lufthansa before.
As long as it's not paper ZED, I had to do a paper ZED on Cape Air SJU-STT one time and it was a pain in the rear. I mean, they had plenty of frequency so I made a flight but it took more than an hour to get DL to sell me the paper and then have Cape issue the boarding document. Anything through ID90 is straightforward and simple enough.
