Trying to understand this process a bit more, but seeing guys all over the seniority spectrum get displaced isn't making sense to me. Thanks, and yes I took the short bus to school growing up
There was a surplus of 10 DTW 777 Captain positions on this AE, which Crew Resources described as the beginning of closing that category by summer 2019. 5 DTW 777 Captains took voluntary displacements, and the pilot you mentioned (#928) is one of 5 that had to be mandatorily displaced to reach the advertised -10 positions.
These are very senior Captains being displaced out of DTW 777. When displaced they can go to whatever category they want that has a pilot junior to them. When they go to ATL 777 or LAX 777 for example, the junior pilots in those categories can be forced out if there are no vacancies to absorb the additional staffing. These are called secondary displacements. This can ripple effect badly down the seniority list if there are not enough vacancies allowed somewhere to cushion the blow. This is why Crew Resources chose to do a giant bid last year when closing DTW 747 and NYC M88. The 747 guys especially would have caused significant secondary displacements if not for DTW A350 vacancies and many other vacancies around the system.
One thing that can cause confusion is that the AE results are broken up into three lists. The first list is awards for vacancies. The second list shows surplus displacements sorted by which category pilots are displacing TO. The third list shows the same displacements but is organized by which category pilots are displacing FROM. They are not labeled particularly well.
