It is very possible to get hired on as an Army guy in the Air National Guard. There is a ME qualification course that Army FW guys can attend prior to training in the 130, 135, or 17 without having to go through UPT. A good friend of mine was on schedule for a C-130J assignment but his civilian job moved him out of state before he could attend. I have another friend who was a 64A driver that got offered a C-17 Slot and turned it down for a chance to be a company commander.

In my amature opinion it is all about the unit, and if they want you there are ways to get you in and qualified. The key is making yourself known and proving that you are a person they would want to work and fly with.
