As it is now, it's a complete mish-mash of when people upgrade--depending on their life goals and circumstances. Some people favor quality of life and accept a lower paying seat to remain more senior and get the schedules they want, some people stay in seats and equipment to do home town flying, some people like/dislike international and bid accordingly, etc, etc.
With the new variable benefit retirement plan that is being discussed now, if it comes into effect, I suspect more people will upgrade earlier as retirement earned is based on pay (to be very simplistic about the new potential plan).
