Giving money to people for going above and beyond is always socially acceptable. No one expectd you to tip your barista but the option is available. Same with flight attendants. If you feel overwhelmed by service, feel free to tip but it is not required.

There are sectors where you are expected to leave a tip for above and beyond service. Van drivers are one of them. Sorry grumpy old man, you're wrong on this one.
