I always check in, regardless of whether it is required. I even try to check in when I’m deadheading. It just seems courteous. I also take a moment to introduce myself to the FAs. My courtesy always appears appreciated, and CAs often tell me to let them know if I can’t find a spot for my bag, et cetera.
I always find it odd though when D2s/A1D,etc. check in up front despite having a seat assignment, but to each their own. I was just clarifying to the OP that it isn’t required given the conditions I mentioned.
