And I hate to burst the bubble of people who think the military is infallible, there are some people in the military who don't "deserve" it. The fact is, if you can get through basic training, no matter how worthless of a human you are, you are almost virtually guaranteed a retirement.
So utterly incorrect. The ratio of basic training graduates to retirees is huge. The military is as close to a meritocracy as it gets. Sure, there are some deadbeats, but very few of those make it to a 20 year career. They don't make promotion gates and are forced out. Nobody gets to retire as an E1.
