Yep. MD88 entered service for Delta in 1988, the last in a series developed from the DC-9. It's 30 years old, getting tired, and won't do much if anything the Embraer -195 E2 won't do better and cheaper, while burning a lot less Jet A. Heck, the MD88 still has JT8Ds.
Makes all the sense in the world to start replacing the old MD88s - and stapling over 600 already qualified pilots onto the bottom of their seniority list to fly it.
