A great deal of the staffing issues center around the lack of vacation or the PTOSB. In an effort to become more efficient the airline must know staffing levels in advance. As I’ve mentioned before the reserve grid numbers are not a function of proper planning but a reflection of how he operation fared on this day last year. There is little, if any, science. More pilots want the QOL benefit of a properly staffed airline than they do the extra 10 hours of pay per month.
For the record we didn’t always have PTOSB. For many years pilots complained about the inability to use PTO or availability for vacation. The airline responded. In an effort to assist pilots to use a benefit the airline never intended for them to use PTOSB was created.
