Not exactly....each pilot can determine his/her own meal safety standard. If I'm on a transcon with two meals (B/L/D and a snack) I'll eat the hot meal first. Kind of difficult to claim that meal as spoiled unless the catering was loaded upline or super early, but usually at a hub catering is loaded fairly late. The second meal, usually a snack, will have been sitting several hours plus the transit time from catering to the aircraft. Before I accept the second meal, I'll check to see how fresh it is or if it's been kept cold. More often than not, it's not been kept cold either from the cart being left open or no dry ice. In that case I'll consider the 2nd meal spoiled. With all that said, I've boarded a plane in IAD that had been sitting for several hours catered with our meals not on dry ice. The trays were covered in condensation and the food was warm to the touch, which I consider spoiled. Replaced and expensed before ever leaving the gate, and not one question asked by the company. Just be able to justify your reasoning, that's all.
