Virtually utter BS. At United, virtually every single WB line is commutable on both ends easily. Also, as a low-mid seniority narrowbody lineholder I never have a trip that isn’t commutable. There are always a few 0600 departures or 2300 arrivals, but apparently pilots that live local that don’t like driving in through rush hour traffic always seem to take those. Even the last Captain in my BES who got a line had a 100% commutable line (I know because I just flew with him and he showed me his July schedule).
While there is no language in the United contract that I know of that controls how many trips must be commutable, our duty and trip rigs are such that would financially punish the company for trips starting early and ending late, so they don’t build them.
Based on what I’ve seen regarding your upcoming contract, you don’t really need scope protections because its still a cheap enough contract that it doesn’t make sense to try to outsource any flying, other than what can be done with code sharing.
Good luck.
