It’s not a matter of keeping pace. Each company has different attrition numbers and hires accordingly. Our biggest deal was parking the 747. When you displace off the top it rolls downhill and clogs up the training center. I also read somewhere that UAL has a higher staffing rate per plane than other companies and they seem to be trying to become more efficient in how they use labor. For what it’s worth, I just flew with one of the sim guys who said that the 747 backlog is gone and that as of now all of the max and used airbus planes are all growth. They’ve been hiring and training instructors to handle the load. Hopefully Delta will be complaining about how many we’re hiring for the next few years. Of course another major recession or spike in fuel prices would change the plan.
