If you are a paying customer, board at your number. That is the system. Don't use your crew ID to cut in line unless you want to follow the pre-board restrictions.
I’ve been A21 and boarded in the back of the A21-25 group. I don’t think everyone is in exact order. I didn’t feel “screwed”. If you want first dibs on a seat, fly an airline that has assigned seats. This guy didn’t do anything wrong and good on him for standing up for himself.
