I spoke with a recruiter today and after a year of service you can apply to transfer to positions you're qualified for and you'll be considered before an outside hire. I'd like to speak with someone who's done it but that sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
From what I know, back in the day, getting the interview meant the job was yours to lose, so throwing boxes was the best way to get the interview. But now, with the interview being more of an HR event, getting the interview "prematurely" if they wouldn't have called you otherwise, could possibly hurt you. But that's purely speculation on my part.
Back in the day, you also had to wait 18 months before you could transfer from box-thrower to any other position. Not sure if that's dropped down to 12 months now or not. I'm out of the loop.
