I believe this is a common misconception. It is my understanding that Flight Instruction does not count as "Commercial flying" with regards to 121.471 as it is does not fit the definition of "air commerce."
Flight instruction is allowed by Mesaba in this regard since it does not affect your 121 flight time limitations. You are still bound by 61.195 limiting flight instruction to 8 hours per day.
