I spent much of my career landing on 25 ( now 25L and 25R) at LAS.
The illusion of being high is caused by the mountains on the horizon. Normally the horizon reaches the bottom third of the windshield, but the mountains reach the top third. It gives the appearance of diving towards the runway.
With these straight in approaches ATC will keep your speed up for as long as possible.
As recall, in the 727 if you could see the runway over the nose, you could land on it.
250 knots at the marker, spolilers, gear, flaps ... more flaps and you could be stabilized at bug +5 by 500 feet!
But it was alot more comfortable to cross the Boulder Highway at 200 knots, in the slot, and make a leisurely approach.
