My lil brother completely learnt from flight simulator 2004
I think is very useful to learn all the instruments in the cockpit so dont get confused
but for Ir why not to use Flygo Pilot Trainer IFR Pack app for iPhone, iPad | FlyGo-Aviation Ltd. or something which is real??? Xplane for me is just a game

It's not going to do much for stick-and-rudder maneuvers, missing tactile feel, peripheral vision, etc.
