Anecdotally, several (over five) of my acquaintances at Fortune departments/High Net Worth accounts are just hoping for “the call” from a major airline.

Most cite the lack of schedule as the biggest driver, combined with less pay/retirement/health care than a narrowbody captain/widebody FO. The younger (40s and below) are also concerned about a GM-type scenario where they’re 55 with kids in school and their department shutters (not to say the airline industry isn’t fickle).

Most are frustrated in that their duties as “international captains” are many and the body of knowledge is deep, yet they aren’t able to command market price for their skills nor have control over their schedule.

Most like their role (great equipment, destinations, etc), but find it hard to justify. That all being said, not all corporate jobs/people are the same. As stated above, there is nothing wrong with either side of the industry. Just depends on one’s personal situation.
