You could get hired sooner, buy going through the outside. I know a few guys that got hired quicker going through the outside, than waiting for UA to call. So it's up to you, which way to go.
From my experiences with fully qualified candidates, it's really hard to get an interview with United. IMO, it's not quicker to get hired going elsewhere at this point. Most of the low time people or "barely at the regional" that get hired with United are exceptions to the rule.
