That’s not entirely true according to a high level ALPA National attorney; at least that’s what he informed me a few years ago when I made the same comment.

He said that while an LEC represents his council pilots’ views, he ultimately represents the entire pilot group when making decisions and providing guidance at the MEC level. The example he gave was this: if pilots of an LEC want their rep to vote no on an issue, but said rep has knowledge/info that shows that such a position would be detrimental to the entirety of the pilot group, then that rep is beholden to the majority of the pilot group, not only the LEC. Doing otherwise could open up ALPA to DFR suits.

Was the attorney lying? Was the attorney wrong? Is he willing to sacrifice a pilot group to protect the interests of National? I don’t know and I’m sure everyone will have their own opinion. But his answer shows that very few things are as black and white as your post purports.

Don’t shoot the messenger. Just passing along a relevant discussion that I was previously a part of.
