I don't think staffing comes into play at all. Mid trip yesterday I noticed that I had been displaced for IOE, and twenty minutes later they had me on a new 4 day. Even though the trip was on Friday and yesterday was obviously Monday.
I thought they wouldn't assign anything until the day before, but that is not how it works. Rather they can assign trips until that day.
