Why presume to tell the guy what he should want out of life with no answer to his question?
To answer the question, rumors abound all the time about base changes. They will deny they are closing anything until the memo comes out closing it. If PDT is a place you'd like to work anyway, look at SYR as a bonus. If you can't tolerate PDT without SYR, I wouldn't go, you just never know if you will be able to hold the base or when it might get closed.
SYR was closed by ALG largely to simplify the transition to PDT, for what it's worth.
