Being within 17 minutes of timing out and cancelling the flight isn't exactly a shining example of efficiency. Maybe that was the only way they could have covered that flight and if so I get it...from a short term immediate needs perspective. But how did it get to that point? And we're supposed to be fat on pilots right now, to the point of cutting next year's hiring in half even as retirements continue to rapidly build. Running on fumes and covering flights with the last possible pilot theoretically available is hardly an example of tactical efficiency. Sounds like they just got lucky.
Yet, it got done. As it always does. That proactive captain saved the day and all is well. As for the hiring, you really have to have a crisis before you can extract more productivity.
