Yup, this is the standard with the RLA. 4 year contracts are always 5 and many times 6+. It’s the nature of the beast. Airlines get another year of fixed costs because the union is prohibited from labor actions. The union has a big opener because of the lack of opportunity to get more. Then both sides try to read the economic tea leaves to see if delays will benefit them. Finally a shaping of perceptions to convince the pilot group that the deal is right and timely and that this is all that’s on the table.
