Forget AA if you want to be a CA at a major; go to a DAL regional with flow thru, and you'll hold CA on 717/MD80/320 within 18 months if you go to NYC.
Envoy (AAEagle), Piedmont and PSA, all owned by AA, are the only three regionals that I have heard of that have direct flow through...to American.
UAL/LH has a program for CFIs: Get hired by LH/UAL, fly as an instructor for the LH cadet school in AZ, when you reach ATP mins, and other UAL requirements, go direct to UAL (bypassing regionals) for 5 years on narrowbody aircraft, and then you can bid normally...
