This seems like a weird formality to me.
Because jumpseating is at the discretion of the captain. You need permission, it’s not checking in. You ride with his/her permission regardless of where you sit. Can’t really discuss it much more than that because this site restricts jumpseat procedure discussions. Go to the ALPA website and hit the jumpseat info there. It will explain all the details.
Non-Reving on a D2 is different, you do not check in.
