Exactly this, at least it was like that 2 yrs ago. Maybe they can be a little more picky after the contract but the hiring process when I went through it was looking for a "fit", not just hiring whoever has the most hours or biggest...whatever.

Half of the interview was sitting in a room chatting with the other applicants and a couple HR folks, with more HR folks in the back noting how the interactions were playing out. Basically they're hiring on personality and if you can't fly you'll just wash out of training. Seems to be working, all the spirit pilots I flew with were good people both to fly with and to hang out with during the trip.
