I too remember seeing these guys launch out of Kadena in the mid/late 80s --- you always knew when becasue of the tankers taking off first!
Also, I've always enjoyed the Air Traffic Controller / SR-71 "climb vs descent story" --- an amazing jet.
Actually the very first clue that the Habu was launching was the crowd would begin to gather on the grassy knoll on the north side of 5 L.
There would usually be 20-50 folks standing on the little hill waving an smiling amonst the mego telephoto lenses. You just knew a habu launch was forthcoming.
