Hotels are impractical in NYC but consider AirBnB. Single occupancy, many acceptable options around $40-50/night.
Also, look for those prices. You can find them as low as 20$ a night, but I realized very quickly one night in LGA that I'm not broke enough to avoid spending the extra 20-30$ on a "decent" place.
