Cannot believe DAL would even look at Alitalia. Back in 1999 when I was still flying in the EU KLM was looking at a merger, and I knew some dutch guys that ended up training there in anticipation of the ISL. I don't think I ever heard a single positive thing about Alitalia. I don't think the have ever showed a profit, have been dependent on gov welfare for decades, will strike every Tuesday, horrible customer service, you name it.
But seriously, while I don't presume to fully understand the business world, there are lots of very successful companies that were once at the bottom of their industry.
