The hub and spoke airline world only works if you have multiple hubs stretched out along your network. When you have one hub and its in the upper left corner of the box, you will not succeed. They have to know this is a failed concept.



Idea, SFO, bad options for obvious reason, but the bay area as a whole can be a hub (OAK, SFO, SJC) to a degree, then look at other cities to consider as well.
