There was no structure in place preventing anyone's "move up" in MLB. Your numbers were either good enough, or they were not.
The structures, if you want to call them that, were in place to prevent admittance. It was assumed (and correctly so), you could stay in show if you produced and the numbers justified your presence.
Chris Sampson is no longer a MLB pitcher because he's white. You do get that right?
His career was short because he allowed too many hits and runs.
