No problem. The interview process is done by the regional and not affiliated with the major in this case. So here is the scenario, the online job application asks you if you have been arrested and what for. An airline may not call you for an interview based on this information that you give. I would assume a major airline would have thousands of other qualified applicants without said blemishes who they would call first. A regional, on the other hand, may be looking to hire just about anyone with the qualifications depending on the hiring environment. I’m not saying that this is the case now, but I know 100% for a fact, from a friend, that a class B misdemeanor for shoplifting will not disqualify you from becoming an airline pilot for one of these regionals, again, assuming the hiring environment is in your favor. This is without an expunged record with a pretrial diversion. The hopes for the major airline down the road would be, in my estimation, that 6 years or so as a responsible regional airline pilot, without incident, would be more of an indication of your ability to be a responsible major airline pilot than a past transgression such as this. Lastly, depending on the state, an expunged record may mean that you are not legally required to answer in the affirmative if asked about the expunged arrest/crime unless you are under oath in front of a judge being specifically asked. I would be cautious about this approach as an FBI background/fingerprint check will likely still pull up the information. Many will say it’s better to be upfront and not get the job, then to seem like you are trying to hide something and maybe that ruins your chances at the next company. And fyi, my friend was never asked about the arrest in the actual interview after disclosing it on the application. This is likely due to some type of HR/legal type of thing that the company was being cautious about. That’s my guess anyway. Bottom line, it can be done. Good luck to you
