I was really just thinking most would rather not deal with the short call. You, like me, don’t mind it. If someone lived in Dallas and had to commute to NYC and buy a hotel for the short call, he might feel differently about it. Part of my thinking is based on the discussions about the change to 9 hour short call a couple months back. Almost everyone on APC was venting about how exceedingly onerous (to them) it is to be on short call.
I hear you. Personally, I've liked the change to 9 hour SC. I'm also an advocate of incentivizing pilots to bid for SC...one hour ABOVE the guarantee, whether used or unused. That rising tide would lift all boats: IMHO commuters would get fewer SC, line-holding would go more junior overall, the company might disperse SCs more cautiously, and we could see more green slips.
