Not true. I worked for a non-union contractor in a heavily unionized industry (IBEW) and with just a little extra effort and maybe a little more intelligence than the guys working under union shops, my compensation almost doubled to my equivalent at the journeyman pay scale.
It’s kind of difficult for an airline to operate under a merit-based system though, when so many variables are out of your control and as pilots we all do the same job. How can you prove pilot A is better than pilot B in order for pilot A to argue that he deserves more compensation because his talent brings more profit in? Maybe things like outstanding customer service or perfect attendance, but not much more than that.
