I have seen girlfriends, spouses and SOs of both pilots and flight attendants on overnights. Most of them have rented a car because of their plans once they got there, but I have seen them on the van as well. As others have stated, the most critical thing is space. Do you know how big the van is or whether they use a taxi at the location? Will there be another crew? Might not even be another Envoy crew and there may not be one in one direction but there is the other. Just like not making the flight itself, you have to be prepared for that possibility.
The biggest issue with coming up front is time. I’m sure you know how pressed we are. It has to be before with plenty of time AND cooperation from the gate agent. Afterwards, the gate agent isn’t an issue, but you still need to have the time where there isn’t a crew waiting to get on and are already late, which is usually our situation.
And like everyone said, whoever it is has to be able to get back alone if they don’t make the flight. I saw that once. The husband of a FA didn’t make the flight. Later she told us he made it back but had to fly through a different hub to get home.
