All I would say is I've lived in a state that gave LGBT all the same rights and tax deductions as married couples but termed it "civil unions". The day after that law passed, LGBT activists sued saying it wasn't enough until it was called marriage.
If I remember, one of the reasons this was an issue was because all of the other laws and rules written by states and local governments that only recognized "marriage", such as for things like loved ones medical decisions, or life insurance, etc. So it's either go back and re-write thousands of other laws to assure equal rights, or be done with it by just making it "marriage".
