I wouldn’t say he’s childish. Just slightly out of touch with regional operations. For example a near-DEC and a short reserve stint that he wanted. I don’t mean any offense with that. That’s why the forums are great for learning.

I commuted. to reserve for almost a year and I was close to quitting. It was brutal. I vowed never to do it again. Hence when I upgraded, I bought an apartment and moved. My guess is that a near-DEC reserve will take about 1.5-2 years to hold a line due to being pushed down by the guys that you bypassed. Would I do it if I didn’t live in base? Heck no. But that’s just me.
Are you married? Easier to do when you aren't. My wife can retire in 5 years, so it's out of the question.
