I hate this "requirement" or question from recruiters. I'm a damn pilot, not a social worker or politician. Their only concern should be if you're a safe, competent pilot and a likeable person that others would enjoy working with.
How about this answer to the recruiter. "I have 11 days off a month at home. I take care of my family and my home in those precious few days. I don't have the damn time to be Mother Teresa, okay."
In your case the response will likely be “But you had almost two decades worth of days off from flying, what have you done with your time to contribute to the greater good of society?”
