Yeah....
but seriously, if the company wants to hide money it's harder now.
used to hide it and move it around in short and long term investments, short and long term hedges. stock buy backs. funding retirements. buying equipment. renovations, improvements.
Our last contract, the merger contract was really easy. The company needed the pilots. Both pilot groups had the financials and there was allot of transparency. Company knew a fight on scope wouldn't be productive.
On the contract extension, the company didn't want to chase their tail. The cycle of other airlines making improvements would have meant the company essentially would have been negotiating against themselves. Raising the bar, and then raising the bar. This way other airlines did the heavy lifting.
Now, it's UAL's turn in the front of the firing line. Company will re-state their "scope position" in terms of we can do X, Y, or Z, but you gotta give us scope. Can't do x or y because no money, but we might to Z if you ….fill in the blank. Lots of smoke and mirrors, but all roads lead back to scope. Sorta like driving on a round about. Every 10 seconds we see scope out the right hand window.
