No. They go on LTD (which hopefully will be raised on the upcoming contract but currently pays out around 8K a month tax free until retirement age) and can also work outside the company in a position not requiring a medical. Not sure if working in a non flying position at UAL is allowed while collecting LTD. Someone more familiar will probably chime in. Good luck with the search.
