I'll only speak to what I know for AA.
Nowhere did the web based application ask about characterization of service. I was still on AD during the F2F, which was the only time anyone asked me to see a 214. Obviously didn't have one, but a letter from my command indicating my separation date apparently met the need. That leads me to believe that AA only cared that you were actually separated, or separating prior to your hire date (at least in the context of the 214).
