It would have surely been a fight, one that the pilots would have eventually won because it's hard to operate a flight with the brake set. As to if I think it actually happened, ABSOLUTELY. I've seen tower beg for an on time on FF to include asking people to do things against policy that would look really bad in the media. Middle front line managers at Delta are 100% yes men and would do pretty much anything to make their little feifdom look perfect...to include asking to keep the main door closed and sneak mx in another door to keep the crew from timing out.
