I specifically talked to an ATL chief pilot about this issue 3 years ago. You are not supposed to be listed as a jumpseater in your back up flight.
That being said, if the first flight is tight, I will list non rev right before they start clearing people and if I make it, I’ll cancel my jumpseat. Probably have both booked for maybe 20 minutes. Usually I am able to cancel the jumpseat before I list as a non rev on the earlier flight.
Not sure if this rule applies if your 1st flight is OAL.......
