We are too short on bodies to permit a screwed up schedule. This isn’t just about people being paid, that can be covered by tossing dollars at it, but they can’t screw up this badly and be able to actually execute the flying schedule - not in summertime.
My original July schedule was...awesome. Probably the best I’ll EVER see until I’m like 64 and 1/2. Of course it didn’t include training that I and a lot of other people needed. And if we had simply shoved that training into the August schedule -along with the August training - the bodies wouldn’t have been there to execute the August flying. Probably not September either.
So OK, it sounds like schedule 2 may be FUBAR as well. Excess training days hurt us in July but it also means that some people aren’t getting the flying hours they are going to need to upgrade promptly this Fall, and we need people on the leading edge of the hiring wave after the long hiring freeze to upgrade because we are losing a LOT of captains to the majors as soon as the summer rush for them and us is over.
Yes, the hiring freeze was disastrously stupid, but that was two years ago and it can’t be changed now. It’s consequences need to be dealt with. And yeah, management shouldn't Have run the operation this lean, but they did and even if they hired another couple hundred new FOs tomorrow it would do nothing to alleviate the captain shortage in time for the next six months.
And oh yeah, it woukd have been nice if whoever is currently messing up the schedule had been appropriately trained before they were put in that position, and to that extent it is a lose lose situation, but it has to be done RIGHT, right enough to get a legal and executable schedule, both now and for the next six months. All of our careers will depend on that.
