FDX is probably the one place I'd make an exception for when it comes to commuting. I have a friend there who flies the 75, and his schedule is nothing short of amazing, he works 6-8 days a month, with zero redeyes. (Then again, he commutes on his own metal, and the flight and drive are less than an hour combined). And the ability to specify which extra pay assignments one wants on their day off... unheard of anywhere else that I know of!
Good for you getting to FDX, glad to see a fellow pilot moving on to a better schedule and happier times (and pay, too!).
I agree FedEX is an awesome gig from what buddies have told me once you get some seniority to avoid the nasty hub turns in and out of MEM with sits from midnight to 3am on the 757. That being said, with regards to your friend working 8 days a month. My understanding is their min day is 6 hours. So I’m guessing he is getting premium trips on those 8 days a month??? Otherwise even at 7 hours min a day that’s only 56 hours a month. A year 4 757 FO at $155/hr at 56 hours a month could easily be matched by a year 4 JB 320 FO at $151/hr.
Anyways, FedEX is an awesome place to be an airline pilot from what I hear but only really starts to pull ahaead big time in my opinion if you take advantage of the quick 757 upgrade (<2 years) or go into the Widebodies ASAP. I understand hanging out in the right seat of the 75 gets you out of the hub turns and great quality life, but from a pay perspective it seems to me to be the same as flying a NB at the Major PAX carriers.
